Whole-of-value-chain collaboration
for national impact

Research Programs

The Future Textiles CRC will deliver three integrated Research Programs spanning the textile lifecycle. Together, they will support the creation of better textiles, keep textiles in productive use for longer, and recover value at end of life.

Cross-cutting capabilities in education and training, policy, business models, AI and digital technologies, and behaviour change will support all three Programs.

Enablers

Viable and sustainable circular textile solutions ready to be implemented by manufacturers and retailers.

Possible themes include

Program 1

Create

Program 1 looks at the sustainable creation of a textile. It will work with natural, bioderived and recycled fibres. It will create resilient and viable sustainable textile solutions. It will provide a testing ground for manufacturers and retailers to test circular concepts and products.

>

Design led innovation to enhance circularity

>

Viable textiles from recycled rich feedstocks

>

Development of new bioderived fibres to supplement existing natural fibres

>

Advanced manufacturing solutions to lower impact

>

>

Safe and green chemistry for nature-based solutions

>

Developing manufacturer networks to enable local implementation of circular solutions

Key outcomes

Textiles that have less impact on the environment during their use. A thriving textiles industry & culture.

Possible themes include

Program 2

Use

Program 2 will examine keeping textiles in use. It will examine environmental pain points and determine ways to lessen a textile's impact as it is used. The program strategically brings together services and products.

>

Repair, refurbishment, reuse and resale systems to enable longer textile life

>

Standards, policy and enabling frameworks

>

Service design and product-service systems (PSS) framed within existing and emergent business models.

>

Understanding loss of fibres and their impact

>

>

Circular systems and supply chains

>

Social change – changing perspectives

to enable circularity

Key outcomes

Diverting textiles from landfill.
New green jobs and skills.

Possible themes include

Program 3

Transform

Program 3 will develop technology and strategies to enable a next life for textiles. At some stage, a textile will get to a point where repair, reuse and resale are not viable. Systems and strategies need to be developed to sort, separate and recover the value from textiles and to establish and grow the ‘next markets’.

>

Behavioural change to enable recovery at end of life

>

Separating problem textiles to release their potential

>

Sorting and de-commissioning to capture the textile value

>

Improving mechanical, melt and chemical recycling

>

>

Understanding composting and biochar options for textiles that cannot be reused

>

Access to new manufacturing capability

Capability, Skills and Industry Development

To reimagine the textile industry in Australia we need to create the people to do it. Skills will be different to many of those existing in the current market. The CRC will provide:

>

Workforce development

>

Micro-credentials and professional development

>

Industry placements

>

Pathways to attract the next generation into textiles

>

>

Higher degree research

>

Develop new manufacturing capability across Australia
